Growing up I have always had pets part of our lives and as an adult I have had and have fostered many animals. We have had hundreds of animals pass through our doors over the years. Below are just some random things I thought I would share from my experience.
It’s that time of year when your pet’s allergies may be kicking in. OR maybe you have a pet that has tummy issues or anxiety, licking their paws or itchy skin. If so, you need a pre & probiotic. I recommend Fera Pet Organics Probiotics with Organic Prebiotics for Dogs & Cats
This stuff is great and totally helped my dog from licking her feet until they had sores. It is natural with no fillers, odorless and tasteless so you can just mix it easily with their food.
One time when we had a new puppy that was having tummy issues, our vet gave us FortiFlora and that also worked very well.
When fostering we often get extremely scared animals that just want to hide in a corner. We have found that the best thing to do is put them in a room where they can’t hide under anything and then just lay on the floor. Don’t move around a lot, no sudden moves, just lay there calmly for however long it takes. One time I brought home a ferral kitten and it just hissed and bounced off the walls (literally) trying to get away from me. I remembered this trick and I just layed down. It didn’t take long for this one to come out of its shell and come up and started cuddling in my hair. Others may take a few days. It may take some time (so don’t be in a hurry) but once they realize you are not a threat, they will eventually calm down and come by you to smell and see what is going on.
I also recommend having a dedicated room in your home for foster animals. Especially kittens & puppies. We have learned over the years that they can cause quite a mess and be stinky! If it is one dog or one cat, that is a different story.
If you are scared of fostering because you think you will want to keep them all, you are correct, (hence why we currently have 4 cats and a dog). But, just keep in mind that you are helping them transition to a new forever home and they will be fine. When fostering kittens or puppies, I feel that when I do a larger litter, 3, 4 or more, I have no problem giving them back when they are ready. I am very ready to get my house back. Also, the Animal Humane Society has a great program for domestic violence victims. Often victims of DV will not leave because they don’t want to leave their pet behind. The Animal Humane Society will take them and foster them out until the victim can get back on their feet. These are great animals to take in because you know that they are going back to their owner. All Rescue organizations are always looking for great foster volunteers so reach out if you are interested.

ONE OF MY BIGGEST PET PEVES WITH PET OWNERS!
Here in MN summer is winding down and the heat is getting a little more bearable. However, one of my BIGGEST pet peves with pet owners is on those super hot summer days and they are taking their dogs for walks in the middle of the day. I often see people walking their dogs on the hot hot pavement or sidewalk in the middle of the day when it is over 90° outside. Did you know that even if it is only 80° out, the pavement can be as hot as 115°. As a pet owner, you should know better. We were at the big Riverfest craft show in Anoka this past July and there were several people there with their dogs. It was so hot out and you could see that these poor dog’s feet were burning. They were picking up their paws and limping along and the owners were none the wiser. It absolutely drove me nuts and I had to start saying something.
Believe me, I get wanting to take your dog with you places. But when it is that hot out, and if you don’t have proper gear for your dogs feet, DON’T BRING THEM!
Dressing up your pet: I never thought I would be one of those people who dressed up their pet. But low and behold… I am. I was at Kohls one day and they had a sale on these cute little sun dresses for Dogs so I thought why not. When I got home and put it on her, that was it…. I was hooked. Now she has her own little section in my closet. You can get some really great deals on Amazon.
Plus Halloween is just around the corner so it is time to start check out this year’s costume!
Fall Photo Opportunity: Fish Sunflowers’ Free Fields
They have a few locations around town, one being in Andover and it is a GREAT place to take your dog for a fun photo shoot.
So these are just a few thoughts that I wanted to jot down. But if you are looking for a great pet friendly blog that has info on tons of things dog related, places to go, things to do, etc., check out Sidewalk Dog.
